There is a literacy support programme for children in the Rumaki.

Information Technology
The school has an up to date computer network with 1 computer per room and 20 in the suite.
All classes are timetabled to use the suite weekly and children are challenged to develop new information
and communication skills.
There is an intranet in the school for communication between classrooms.
The computer suite is open daily at lunch time for children to use computers
under supervision.

Library Focus
There are over 6000 titles in the library.
All classes visit the library weekly.
It is also open for half an hour at lunch time for children to relax in and enjoy books.

Student Leadership
School Council
The council is made up of House leaders, deputy leaders and other senior students.
They meet regularly and have a lot of opportunities to develop leadership roles within the school.
Road Patrol
This is another way for children to develop leadership and serve others.
A large team of students are trained annually to do duty on the three crossings at the school.
Buddy supporters
Buddy Supporters are trained to work with children in the Junior School to help them play games to resolve issues.
Two students are on duty each day.
Librarians
Enthusiastic librarians are trained to assist in running the library.
These children keep the library tidy, assist in issuing books and providing a stimulating environment.

PrEP
Primary Enterprise Project
Most children in Years 3 to 6 have the opportunity to participate in this economic programme in term 3
every year.
Children run ventures, receive wages, and sell goods at markets using a school currency.
A great way to learn about real life situations.

Numeracy
The school staff are trained to use the NUMPA programme, the current approach to Mathematics teaching.
Children are encouraged to develop different ways to solve problems.

Reading Programmes
Nawton School Board is generous in supporting reading development in the school.
It provides opportunities for 4 children a day to participate in Reading Recovery.
This is for Year 2/3 children.
Nawton Enhanced Reading Programme involves groups of 4 children working for half an hour with a skilled,
trained reading teacher to support them.
There is a very high success rate with this approach.

Duffy Books
Books in Homes
The school belongs to the Books in Homes Trust and over 3,500 books are distributed in the community annually.
Every child selects five books, and eight books are presented at each weeks assembly for effort and
achievement in the classroom.
All preschoolers receive a book on their birthday.

Study Centre
This is a place for children to do supervised Homework from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, Monday to Thursday.
The cost is $30 per term.
There is access to computers and the Internet available.
